kitesurfing accident and panik

It has been a while since I last wrote on my blog about the things that feel important to me in kiting. While I never forgot about it, there where other duties that required my full attention such as family and building my own house. A bigger impact was required to get back to you in the form of a crazy accident a couple of days ago.

Fuerte Winter

In this little Video I'd like to show you what I've been up to over the last Winter 16/17 here in Fuerteventura. It was my first full Winter season on the Island and I was quite impressed about the kiteboarding conditions. Hoping to build my local knowledge about the spots in the future and explore the beauty of the island. Big up's to my sponsor Core kiteboarding for providing the awesome equipment which lets me charge like this. Drop a comment and share it with your friends if you like them to see this!

Island Bound

Here is a project I've been working on to showcase the different watersports in the canary islands surrounded by the wind and waves. This Video also went in to participate in the Canary Island Surf Film Award. Unfortunately the Award got cancelled, even though 17 participants send in their Videos to be judged. After all it was a nice experience to work with the athletes, videographers and bands to bring this short waterman documentary to the party. Enjoy!

The Lost Video

The Lost Video from Florian Scharscher on Vimeo.

This Video was shot in February 2015 at my homespot in West Oz - Perth by Marion Schweizer.
It's been inspired by Aaron Hadlow and Andrew Gordon which had a huge influence on me over the years. I became passionate about videography because of them and been living a lifestyle evolving around this sport for the last decade which ultimately told me many lessons in life.
Thanks for everyone participating in this project, Marion, Alex, Mark Cruikshank, Billy Hampton, Rodrigo Branco Matsumoto aswell as Perth Kite Surfing, Thank You!

Roadtrip Europe

I've been on the road for the last 5 months traveling through Germany, Italty, France, Spain and ended up on the Canary Islands, Tenerife and Fuerteventura. This has been my first longterm camping experience and I really appreciate the time I get with my family and on the water. Since I haven't been in Europe for the past 4 years I wanted to relocate back to Spain and build something for the journey ahead. So here we are, gypsies of kite heading into the unknown. Hope you like some of the impressions below...

In The Shaping Room: Kite manufacturing

My season in Germany is coming to an end and I've decided to do one more project before I hit the road through Europe. I wanted to build a kite for quite some time to experience the manufacturing process and learn all aerodynamic details and their influences in flight characteristics. With this in mind I made an order for spinnaker and dacron, emptied our basement and pulled out the old sewing machine. During the whole process I was in touch with my friend and autodidact kite designer Karsten Gaebert who has kindly helped me to stay on track during numerous difficult moments. I already had the kite out on several ocassions and I can say I'm pretty stoked how this bad boy turned out. Here is a couple of shots of the building process.

Season at the Turncable

Over the last couple of years I've been to the cable park on the odd occasion but kite-boarded almost every day. This year I'm doing quite the opposite as it marks my first full season at the Turncable in Tannhausen. I thought wake boarding is going to help me to stay sharp and I might be able to feed any progression back into my kiteboarding. Further I was hoping to land some of my kite-boarding inverts relatively quick on the cable, boy was I wrong!

Freestyle Fuerteventura South

After spending a week on Fuerteventuras north shore I was heading south to the area of Jandia. Costa Calma is where the wind and kitesurfing world cup is held each year (VKWC) and lies on a 7 km beach stretch with offshore winds. It's handy to have your tide table near since most of the beaches get flooded on high tide, forming butter flat and rippable lagoons.

Freestyle Fuerteventura North

Fuerteventura has a lot of variety in terms of kite spots and different conditions. I decided to start this trip up north on this beautiful island and move down south later on. Cotillo is a good place to base yourself if you prefer a tranquil location otherwise Coralejo will suit the outgoing person just fine.
